How to learn a foreign language. Part 2. You are smart enough for learning the second language.

The most common misconception.

I meet many men and women who complain that it is so difficult to learn a foreign language, for example, Chinese, Spanish, French or German. They say that they are not smart enough for learning a second language. They complain that they have a bad memory for remembering foreign words, or they do not understand the rules of grammar. I have heard once that for successful studying English you must have a philological mentality. All of these allegations are ridiculous. I was an alike person until I realized all this opinions was the misconception. Ok, let try to discredit your wrong opinion.

Ancestors

I am not going to talk about our distant ancestors and ask you how they learned a foreign language hundred years ago. I want you to think about how people learned the second language, for example, 20 years ago. There were no Internet, apps, many numbers of foreign textbooks and different courses, etc. However, there were only libraries, dictionaries and books. Just imagine in order to find a phrase or rules you had to spend a lot of time. In addition, you could find a native speaker to improve your speaking. It was not so easy to find a beloved book on the language you learned. I want to say that learning a foreign language was harder in tens or hundreds of time than today. Nevertheless, we all know that there were many people who knew the second language. I do not understand why you think they were smarter than we are. Just realize you are not less smart than they were! You can do it! Even more, you have more opportunities than they had! To sum up I allege that now is the best moment and conditionals for learning the foreign language!

I am not smart enough.

The favorite misconception sounds like “I am not smart enough.” In a minute, we will overcome this problem. Ok, I want you to glance around and find the person who has already learnt a foreign language. I am sure you have peers, neighbors, classmates, colleagues who have already done it. Just look at them. Had they really had special skills before they started learning English, French, German, Spanish or Chinese? I am sure that you had thought they were an average person. Even more, you thought you were better than they were, did not you? Just realize if somebody did it, you would do it too. If your friend learned a foreign language, you could learn too. Yes, you are smart enough! You can do it. If they did it somehow, you would do it too. Remember it. Realize it.
