How to learn a foreign language. Part 1. Motivation.
I am going to write a serial of articles about learning a foreign language. In my case, we talk about the English language, but I hope my experience will be interesting for people who learn another one. I believe my story will be useful for people who learn Spanish, French, German or Portuguese. Again, I do not try to convince you that I know the most powerful method of learning a foreign language. I just want to share with you my way and my experience. In addition, I think that it was not the ideal approach for learning English, but it is my own way. I did it how I could. Sometimes I use my intuition, which can be opposed to common opinion. Nevertheless, it works.
I have been learning English for two years. Now I can speak well. As for me, I would say that it is a high level of knowledge, but it is enough to understand and speak to different themes. Now I am carrying on studying English. The most important thing in studying is motivation. This is an energy, which will allow you to go on studying a language for a long period. Learning a foreign language is not a sprint, but a marathon! You have to realize that if you do not use it you will lose it. Moreover, you will be very upset with spending much affords without results. It is a long distance and therefore you have to be strong enough to keep on your learning.
Learning a foreign language is a walking with a backpack on your shoulders. It is hard to climb on top of the hill but it trains you. If there will be the moment in your life when you need to do a leap in your career or life you can put it off and do it ease.
I want to share with you my own experience. I have tried to start learning English maybe two or three times. But I thought that it was really very difficult and I had to have special talents (but, no, it is enough to have average skills. We will talk soon about this.). Once, I have been visited a foreign country. First in my life. It was a work trip. I worked with the foreign specialists and realized that I had the same high level of professionalism. They spoke English fluently (English was not their native language), but I did not! I met the man who was a professional and spoke fluently in English. After that, I decided, that I must be a professional of world level. In order to achieve my goal, I must speak English very well.
Strive to retain the vivid view
And I always retain the vivid view of this person in my mind and strive to be like him. I dream how I will meet him, and we will have a good conversation about our project. I imagine myself negotiating with foreign partners. This emotion feeds me in a mood situation. Find the same person or maybe a celebrity who you want to be alike.
First of all, in order to awake your emotion and motivation, I suggest you to ask several questions. The first question is the next:
What would be if I knew a foreign language? Just try to imagine, one morning you wake up and realize, that you know the foreign language. What would you do? What will your day be? What would you do the first? Just make a step into tomorrow!
- I would quip from my current job and started looking for a new job in an international big company.
- I would start to prepare for the trip to Paris for celebrating the New Year.
- I would watch the movies with my favorite stars.
- I would improve my professional skills by reading books which did not translate on my native language.
What will be if I do not know the foreign language?
- I will languish at my boring work with a low salary.
- I can not travel without an interpreter.
- I will not extend my scope.
Please, be honest! And try to feel each of your answers.
